With SOLAR being the buzzword of the green smart environment, every season sees a new member being added to the family of solar technology. And the latest add on to the list is SOLAR SHINGLES. But, what are solar shingles and how are they different from the solar panels is what is going to be elaborated in the blog today.


Solar shingles are a type of solar panels which make use of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) energy solution to generate electricity.


1. On the basis of their existence:
Solar panels have been in use since long. They were the first soar technology product to be used in satellites too. Whereas, solar shingles have been known to come in use since 2011.

2. On the basis of their looks and appearance:
Today aesthetics play a major role when it comes to introducing any new technology product in the market. Therefore solar shingles being the young member of the solar family are definitely poised with better looks as compared to its older counterpart traditional rooftop solar panel system. Solar shingles carry a non-bulky appearance, unlike the solar panels.

3. On the basis of their cost of installation:
When it comes to the installation cost, the difference amongst them can further be studied in two aspects,

Installation on a new roof
If a new building construction is taking place or if the old roof is being completely replaced by a new one, then the use of solar shingles is a cheaper option because the cost of installing traditional tiles is swiped out. Whereas for solar panels, one needs a layer of traditional waterproof tiles beneath, which adds to the cost of the solar solution.

Installation on the existing roof
The difference in cost, in this case, arises because, for installation of solar shingles, one needs to employ labour for the removal of traditional tiles. In the case of application of the solar solution to the existing roof, solar panels are a better option.

4. On the basis of their efficiency:
Solar shingles face constraint in terms of their angle and tilt, which further limits their efficiency for optimum energy conversion. But there is no such limit when it comes to solar panels which can easily be tilted to adjust their angle for optimum energy conversion.

5. On the basis of their repair and maintenance:
Solar panels are easy to repair or replace without affecting the aesthetics of the roof. Whereas when a solar shingle is to be repaired, then the particular solar shingle and the one surrounding it are to be removed, thus making the entire task comparatively cumbersome.
